Independent Haulers. Stronger Together.

You built this business yourself.
But you're not alone.

The Independent Waste Alliance is a professional community for independent solid waste and recycling operators. You're not in this alone. You've got friends who've faced what you're facing.

Starting at $100/yr

501(c)(6) Antitrust Compliant No price coordination. No territory sharing. Ever.

Most industry associations weren't built with you in mind.

There are good organizations in the waste industry. They serve important roles. But most were designed for large operations, public agencies, or corporate teams. Their dues and programming reflect that.

If you're independently owned, whether you're running 2 trucks or 200, you need something different. Not smaller. Different.

IWA was built from the ground up for independent operators. The pricing, the programs, the events, the tone. All of it is designed for people like you. The only companies we don't serve are publicly traded ones. Private equity-backed companies are considered on a case-by-case basis.

4 things. All of them practical.

01

Education

Training and professional development designed for independent operators and their crews. DOT compliance. Safety certifications. The stuff that keeps your trucks on the road and your people out of trouble. Practical knowledge, not theory.

02

Safety

The waste industry loses too many people to preventable incidents. IWA works with the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) to advance safety research and driver protection. We take this seriously because your crews' lives depend on it.

03

Solidarity

Independent haulers competing in the same markets, united by shared interests. We share knowledge. We raise standards. We strengthen the industry. We do not coordinate prices, bids, territories, or customers. Ever. Your business stays yours.

04

Community

Environmental stewardship programs that serve the communities you pick up every week. Battery recycling education in schools. Composting and food waste diversion that can open new revenue for your operation.

Starting at $100.

If you're independently owned, you're in. You pay according to your size.

Fleet Size Annual Dues
Up to 25 trucks $100/year (up to 5 attendees)
26–49 trucks $250/year
50–99 trucks $500/year
Over 100 trucks $500/year plus $1 per truck in-state

Full access to training programs. Safety resources. Regional events. Vendor partnerships. A professional community of people who do what you do.

Here's what the membership covers.

Access to safety and compliance training built for independent operators.

Regional hauler events with equipment demos, vendor showcases, and sessions that actually apply to your operation.

EREF-partnered safety research and resources, including the Cab for All initiative.

A network of service providers (insurance, equipment, fleet software, financing) who understand independent operations.

A professional community that respects your independence.

Vendors who get independent haulers.

Part of what IWA does is connect members with equipment manufacturers, insurance providers, fleet software companies, and service providers who understand the independent hauler market. Our affiliate members aren't here to work a booth. They're here because they want to serve operators like you.

Affiliate membership starts at $250/year.

Built by haulers. Run by haulers.

IWA is a 501(c)(6) non-profit business league. No shareholders. No corporate sponsors running the agenda. No political positions.

We exist to promote the common business interests of independent solid waste and recycling operators and to improve the conditions they work in. That's the mission. Everything we do connects back to it.

Currently anchored in North Carolina. Growing across the Eastern U.S.

What is the Independent Waste Alliance? +

IWA is a non-profit professional organization built specifically for independent solid waste and recycling operators. We provide education, safety training, regional events, and a professional community for independent haulers. We're organized as a 501(c)(6) business league.

How much does IWA membership cost? +

Hauler membership starts at $100/year for fleets up to 25 trucks, with tiered pricing based on fleet size. Affiliate membership for vendors and service providers starts at $250 per year.

Who can join IWA? +

Any independently owned solid waste or recycling operator. The only companies we don't serve are publicly traded ones. Private equity-backed companies are considered on a case-by-case basis. Affiliate membership is open to equipment manufacturers, insurance providers, fleet service companies, and other vendors serving the independent hauler market.

How is IWA different from NWRA or SWANA? +

NWRA and SWANA both serve important roles in the waste industry. They tend to focus on larger operations, public agencies, and corporate teams. IWA was built specifically for independently owned operators. Our dues, our programming, and our events are all designed around that reality.

Is IWA a lobbying organization? +

No. IWA does not take political positions or lobby on behalf of members. We focus on education, safety, professional development, and community.

Does joining IWA mean coordinating with competitors? +

No. IWA members compete vigorously and independently in the marketplace. We never coordinate pricing, bids, territories, or customer lists. Our solidarity is about shared knowledge, shared standards, and shared respect for the work. Not shared business strategy. This is built into our Code of Conduct and taken seriously.

You know what this industry looks like from the inside of a truck.
So do we.

Independent haulers serve the communities that big companies skip. That work matters. IWA is the room where the people doing it can stand together without giving up what makes them independent.
